The Tour of Tasmania will not return in 2020 due to COVID19 pandemic.
In recent weeks, the Tour of Tasmania management team, GTR Events and Cycling Australia, have constantly and carefully been following the ongoing and changing COVID-19 environment, including reviewing advice provided by the Australian and Tasmanian governments.
In response to the uncertainty of timelines for easing of restrictions and State border closures varying across the country regarding the COVID-19 threat and after much deliberation, and more than a little heartbreak, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Tour of Tasmania.
The Tour of Tasmania was set to take place from the 9th to the 13th December. The Tour forms part of the National Road Series, the premier domestic road racing Series in Australia and sees the rise of Australia’s up and coming cycling talent.
We share the disappointment of our athletes and local community that this decision had to be made- but feel it’s the right one. Tour of Tasmania organising partners have acted with the best interest of all athletes, staff, volunteers and local community members in mind.
GTR Events CEO, Matt Hilton said: “In light of continued restrictions and state border closures as well as ongoing health concerns and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, we are saddened to share that the 2020 Tour of Tasmania has been cancelled.”
“The decision to cancel the Tour was taken after consultation with Cycling Australia and Events Tasmania and we are sincerely disappointed, but unfortunately the circumstances and our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our athletes, staff, volunteers and the Tasmanian community has made it impossible to deliver this year’s event.”
We’d like to thank the ongoing support from Events Tasmania and all our partners and host councils and look forward to bringing the Tour of Tasmania back in 2021.
